The New Industry Normal: A Recap of the All- Virtual AAPC HEALTHCON2020

Each year AAPC sponsors the healthcare conference, HEALTHCON, which was originally scheduled to take place at Disney’s Coronado Springs Hotel in Orlando, April 5-8. Every year the event provides excellent networking opportunities, with thousands of medical coders and healthcare professionals participating.

With an expansive platform to earn continuing education units (CEUs), and prominent speakers, the HEALTHCON event has excellent industry participation year after year. Unfortunately, this year, as with all organized events, the COVID-19 emergency prevented HEALTHCON 2020 from going on as normal, and left organizers in a predicament. However, after much deliberation, and exploration of alternative solutions, AAPC decided to carry on with the event with a promise to deliver the same expectations, only virtually.
Here are some highlights shared by Axea’s team member, Tara Roberts, who experienced all three days of the virtual event earlier this week.

Additional Accommodations

Understanding a virtual experience may not be what participants initially signed up for, AAPC accommodated registrants appropriately.
  • All registrations for the event were automatically transferred and honored for the virtual platform.
  • Provided option to transfer your registration to one of the regional events, or receive a full refund.
  • Easy access required only a computer with a web browser, an internet connection and speakers to participate - no software to purchase.

Added Benefits

In addition to the original resources and benefits that came with registration, the virtual event provided all previously registered attendees with several extra benefits, including:
  • Access to more than 80 sessions of continuing education
  • Free recordings of all conference sessions
  • 50% off* registration of any future AAPC conference of your choosing in 2020 or 2021, including regional events in Denver (August 12-14) and Charleston (September 14-16) or HEALTHCON 2021, which will be held in Dallas (March 28-31, 2021).
  • Added flexibility to jump into other classes without any time restraints

In a virtual experience, the face to face networking of an event with other industry professionals is certainly missed, though there is a certain sense of unity amongst participants.  In every other respect, the three-day virtual conference was a success, and did indeed deliver all that was promised, with a few extra bonuses!
